Serena Williams squalls past Coco Vandeweghe to clear round one – US Open 2012
In an All-American clash, the former world number one, Serena Williams, trounced the 75th ranked compatriot, Coco Vandeweghe, to clear the opening stage of the US Open Championship at New York. She won the match in straight
sets 6-1, 6-1; smashing 16 winners including two aces.
Williams spoke to the media representatives at end of the match. She stated, “The wind was blowing a lot at the Olympics, but I think this may have been more than the Olympics. I usually gauge the wind by my hair. If it's really
going forward, I'm thinking it's really windy. To adjust I try to take pace off my serve. I didn't hit too many aces. I didn't hit anything too hard because I wouldn't have known where the ball was going. The match was so weird because the conditions were
so tough out there, and I really couldn't play my game. She couldn't play her game either."
It was a terrific start for the American fourth ranked professional who is tagged as the hot favourite contender to win the title. She commenced the match with a serve hold to love and bagged four of the following five points to
register the first breakthrough of the match.
The aggression was continued by the fourth seed American who bagged another serve with ease and marched on to claim the second breakpoint courtesy three successive startling winners. The 20-year-old American was absolutely devastated
to all corners of the court.
Vandeweghe had won just two points from the first four games of the match which was a major worrying sign for her. She only won a single breakpoint in the set before falling apart to the 30-year-old compatriot.
Nothing changed for the lower ranked American in the second half of the match. She lost three breakpoints on the trot; hardly managed to squeeze a single breakthrough to avoid an embarrassing bagel. It was obviously a very tough
draw for her.
Next up for the American legend is the Spanish professional, Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, who recently got married. Williams is expected to reign supreme over the Spanish professional.
