Serena Williams suffers shock defeat at the hands of Sabine Lisicki – Wimbledon Championships 2013
The German star, Sabine Lisicki, outperformed top seed Serena Williams, at the Wimbledon Championships 2013 on Monday.
She suffered a 2-6, 6-1, 4-6 loss at the hands of the former world number 12 at this prestigious grass court event being held in London, United Kingdom.
The American icon failed to defend her crown after being edged out by Lisicki in their third encounter. She reflected in a post match press conference, “I didn't play the big points well enough. I definitely feel like I could have gone for it a little more
on some of the shots. I didn't do what I do best. I think I had a little hesitation today.”
Ranked 23rd in the WTA Premier Rankings, Lisicki, made her presence felt from the start of the match. After Williams held her serve in the fourth game, the German unleashed flurry of groundstrokes and took the opener with a 6-2 win in 44 minutes.
The world number one, Williams, went berserk in the following set. After Lisicki held her serve in the opening game, the American star went on a six-game killing spree and grabbed the equaliser with a breadstick.
Williams carried her rhythm in the following set and leaped to a 3-0 lead. The lower seed recovered in the fifth game but lost her edge again, eventually going 2-4 down. However, Lisicki stayed focused and reeled off next four games. As a result, she sealed
the decider by winning six games to four.
The German star earned the limelight after recording her first win against Williams and reaching quarter-finals or better in her all past four meetings at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. Lisicki stunned Svetlana Kuznetsova in 2009, Li Na in
2011 and Maria Sharapova last season en route to quarters at this event.
The beaming Lisicki commented in a courtside interview after recording this victory, “I went out on the court to win the match. That's my goal. That's what I do every time I go out on the court. Of course it gave me a little more energy knowing she won the French
Open and I've beaten the French Open champion three times in a row in my last three appearances. It was a good omen.”
With this shocking exit, the Polish star Agnieszka Radwanska became the new favourite. The fourth seed made an epic comeback from a set down to jolt down a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory against the Bulgarian star, Tsvetana Pironkova.
