Serena Williams sweeps Caroline Garcia to enter round third – Wimbledon Championships 2013
Top seed, Serena Williams, extended her winning run to 33 matches after trouncing the French qualifier, Caroline Garcia, in straight sets at the Wimbledon Championships 2013 on Thursday. She penned down a 6-3, 6-2 victory against
the French to power into the round of 32 at this third of the four Grand Slam events taking place in London, United Kingdom.
The American top ranked star showed her true potential after entering the Court Number One. The contestants previously battled each other at the French Open and after winning this match, Williams maintained her winning record against
the world number 100. As a result she stayed on course to defend her title.
Williams, who completed her career Golden Grand Slam last season, commented in a post match presser, "I still feel like I'm trying to adjust a lot. I feel like today I played a little better than my first round match. I feel like
I had to play better. But I'm still adjusting."
The world number one, Williams high-spiritedly entered the match. She quickly swiped her entire serves without facing any breakpoint. The American cashed two out of five break chances and pulled out the opener with a 6-3 score
line in almost half an hour. Williams fired 14 winners and spilled only three unforced errors.
The Saginaw native, Williams carried her rhythm in the following set. She quickly slid her entire serves without encountering any resistance and cashed half of the four break chances to seal the deal with a 6-2 win. In this 36
minutes set, the American icon smashed 16 winners and committed only six unforced errors.
The five-time champion, Williams will square off against the 42-year-old Japanese, Kimiko Date Krumm, who dumped Romania's Alexandra Cadantu in straight sets to set-up this battle.
The 31-year-old reflected about his upcoming battle against the Japanese, "I have so much respect for her. I think she's so inspiring to be playing such high level tennis at her age. And she's a real danger on grass courts - I
know that - I will have to be ready. Kimiko has great hand-eye coordination. Doesn't matter how hard you hit it, she sees the ball and gets it back.”
Date Krumm made history of becoming the oldest women to reach the third round at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. She also became the second oldest women in Open Era to reach third round at any Grand Slam event.
