Serena Williams takes the number one spot in the world rankings – Tennis News
Reign of the Belarusian superstar, Victoria Azarenka, who successfully defended her Australian Open title at Melbourne in January has finally come to an end and the player who has replaced the 23-year-old Belarusian as the new
world number one is none other than Serena Williams who becomes the oldest top ranked player in the history of women tennis.
After accomplishing the goal, Williams commented, “I'm so sensitive nowadays, I'm always crying! I've just been through so much and never thought I'd be here again. I never thought I would be here again. Oh, my gosh, I've been
through so much. I never thought I would be here. There were often times that I never thought I'd play again. Then I thought I'd never be able to win tournaments or Grand Slams. It was always a dream, but I was No. 1 when tragedy struck, and it was just an
awful thing to happen. So I'm happy that I'm back.”
The 15-time Grand Slam Champion from American clinched the number one spot by dispatching the Czech superstar, Petra Kvitova, in an enthralling three-setter at the quarter-finals of the Qatar Open on Friday. She bounced back a
set down to oust the former Wimbledon Champion with the final score line of 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.
An iconic athlete who was absolutely invincible in the previous season is still a force to beat in the current season. She won seven titles in the last year; winning two Grand Slam events in Wimbledon as well as US Open. She also
rounded off the last year with a year-end trophy at Istanbul. So, the number one spot was always around the corner for the 31-year-old American superstar.
She was troubled with several injuries and some undisclosed medical issues in 2011; missed the bulk of the latter half of that season and wasn’t on top of her game at the start of the 2012 as well but when she picked up the momentum,
there was no stopping her.
Williams will lock horns against the likes of the reigning Australian Open Champion at the semi-final of the Qatar Open on Saturday eve.
