Serena Williams; the second women after Steffi Graf to register a Career Golden Slam – Tennis News
Former world number one, Serena Williams, won her first gold medal at the London Olympics after dumping the Russian diva, Maria Sharapova, in the final of the mega event. What else could be expected from a player of such high calibre
and illustrious career? Her gold medal victory sealed her Career Golden Grand Slam, the mammoth feat achieved only one woman player before in the history of the game.
The legendary German, Steffi Graf, was the first ever contender from WTA to register a Career Golden Grand Slam by winning all the four Grand Slam tournaments, along with an Olympic gold medal at Seoul in 1988. The only women player
to have matched her record was anticipated to be none other than Serena. The American powerhouse had already claimed 14 Grand Slam titles and added the missing Olympic gold medal to her showcase, becoming the only second women to register a Career Golden Grand
Slam.
Serena’s return to the professional circuit has been extremely impactful on the WTA Tour. She has forced her way right up to the world number four after bagging five championship titles this season, including the all-prestigious
Wimbledon crown. Her dream came true in London when she absolutely slaughtered the second seeded Sharapova in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1, in the final of the gold medal match. No one expected such brutal treatment from Serena to the in-form Russian number one
but the American buried Sharapova under her pile of winners and aces to register her glorious victory in the most assertive manner.
"I didn't expect this. I can't even... oh my gosh. I have a gold medal in singles, oh my gosh," an overwhelmed Williams said in her on-court interview moments after winning. "I got the gold. I'm just so happy. I don't know what
to do. I just feel good about my game. I've practiced so hard. It was time."
Sharapova was also competing for the similar feat in the final of the Olympics. She has won all the four Grand Slam titles in her career and just desired an Olympic gold medal to complete her Career Golden Grand Slam. However,
Serena took the privilege from her and spared barely one game for her to conclude her memorable triumph.
It was a lot more than just another title victory for Serena. Her win over Sharapova has marked her name in the history books of tennis forever as one of the best woman tennis player of all times.
