Serena Williams thrashes Julia Goerges in the 2nd round – Rogers Cup 2011
Serena Williams played her second round of the Rogers Cup 2011 against Julia Goerges at the Rexall Centre in York University, Toronto, Canada. Williams scored an impressive 6-1, 7-6(7) win against Goerges and sent her lurching
back to the blocks in just one hour, 34 minutes and 37 seconds.
The American (Williams) and the German (Goerges) had previously taken up the gauntlet at the French Open during the second round in 2010, where, Williams had won the match with a compressive victory of a double bread stick (6-1,
6-1) and had led the head-to-head. Goerges since then has been praying to take her revenge and although she tried, she failed.
The star tennis player, Williams won the pitch and opened the first set by smashing an ace and with geometric precision committed zero double faults, whereas, her opponent struck four aces and four double faults and hence, didn’t
gain an edge.
The powerhouse of serves, Williams left her opponent dumbfounded and she clenched an impressive 72% of her serves against Goerges, who could only put together a poor 35% win of total service points.
The 29-year-old (Williams) not only uses her serves as a dangerous weapon but also has an impenetrable defence that has mastered the art of defending; hence, she did not provide a single break point situation to the 22 year old
Goerges instead, she broke her 3 out of the 4 chances she received.
In addition, slicing well on her return serves Williams achieved 13 out of 20 points, making it an exceptional 65% in opposition to Goerges, who managed a pitiable 28% of total return points and therefore, restricted her opponent
to a single game in the set.
Williams rolled through the first set in exactly 26 minutes by accomplishing 68% of her total set points
Julia Goerges was not to give up easily and fought back in the second set. The second set stayed on serve and eventually by smashing an ace the German forced a tiebreaker. During the tie break Goerges had fell behind 5-2 but later
managed to even it up at 6 points each due to a number of errors committed by Williams. However, on the sixth match point attempt the 29-year-old emerged victorious.
Across the board; the 13 time grand slam winner had bagged 71% of her total service points and managed to save both the break points on her serve.
Following her victory, Williams said, “I thought she played really well and really smart. It was good for me to win that second set and get through it, because not playing my best and still winning is better than playing well and
losing. I think she played better in the second set but I was happy to close it out."
When all was said and done, the former world number 1 Williams saved a spot in the third round of the Rogers Cup where she will be facing the former world number 15 Zheng Jie.
