Serena Williams to play Family Circle Cup – Tennis News
Former World Number 1 Serena Williams has announced that she will feature at the next edition of Family Circle Cup to be held from 31st March to 8th April at the Family Circle Tennis Centre on Daniel Island in Charleston.
The 30-year-old is one of the most accomplished players on the tour. Williams is leading all the active players on the WTA Tour with 13 grand slam titles. She has also 39 career tour level titles to her name.
Organisers of the Family Circle Cup are happy on the inclusion of another top player in their event. Serena joins her sister Venus Williams and Australian Samantha Stosur in the line-up for the tournament.
Tournament manager Eleanor Adams said, "Serena is one of the most popular and recognizable athletes in the world, as well as an overwhelming fan favourite at this event. We couldn't be happier to welcome another former champion to our player field as we
prepare to celebrate our 40th year in women's professional tennis."
Serena will be taking part in Family Circle Cup for the sixth time. The American has a 12-4 win-loss record at this event. She battled past Vera Zvonareva of Russia in three sets 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in the final to lift the trophy in 2008.
In her first appearance here, Serena reached the last eight, getting upset by Swiss Patty Schnyder in three sets 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 in the quarterfinal.
Serena said, "I've always loved Charleston. The fans are very knowledgeable, and the intimate atmosphere makes this tournament one of my favorites. The Family Circle Cup's 40th year celebration is an important milestone in women's tennis.”
The right-hander is yet to win any title in this season. She was upset by Russian Ekaterina Makarova in straight sets 2-6, 3-6 in the fourth round at the Australian Open.
In her only other tournament this year, Serena was on course for the title as she beat Bojana Jovanovski of Serbia 6-2 6-4 in the second round. However, her hopes were dashed as she had to give a walkover to Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia in the quarterfinal
due to injury.
