Serena Williams topples Agnieszka Radwanska to lift the crown – Wimbledon Championships 2012
American number one, Serena Williams, displayed top class performance to conquer the third seed, Agnieszka Radwanska from Poland, in a three-set mouth-watering match at the Wimbledon Championships 2012 on Saturday. She jolted down a 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 victory
against the Polish number one to re-conquer this prestigious grass court tournament taking place in London, England.
The former world number one, Williams re-kindled her spark at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club and edged past the Pole for the third straight time. After stealing the show in almost two hours, the American not only captured her 14th
Grand Slam title and her fifth Wimbledon title.
"Oh my God, I can't even describe it," Williams was quoted in a post-match interview. "I want to thank Jehovah for letting me get this far. I almost didn't make it a few years ago, but now I'm here again and it's so worth it. I'm so happy. I've dreamed of
being here again. It shows if you never give up, you can achieve anything."
Williams stormed into the Centre Court and went on a five-game killing spree with two breaks of serve. After the Pole came on the score sheet for the first time in the sixth game, the veteran held her serve once more and pulled out the opener with a breadstick.
The in-form Pole carried her losing ways in the following set and suffered the first blow in the third game to trail at 1-3. However, she remained focused and not only recovered in the eighth game but got the breakthrough in the last game, eventually sealing
the equaliser by winning seven games to five.
The 30-year-old re-gained her composure in the final set when the match was poised at a knife edge. After the Pole held her serve in the third game, Williams recreated her magic and reeled off the last five games in a row, subsequently registering the decider
with a 6-2 success.
The world number three on the other hand played her best tennis at this third of the four Grand Slam events of the circuit.
"I had the opportunity to win, but it just wasn't my day," she reflected after the match. "But I'm just very happy to be here in the final. I have great memories from here.”
Radwanska will climb to the number two spot for the first time at the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Rankings after making this title-round berth while Belarusian number one, Victoria Azarenka, will become the world number one again.
