Serena Williams tramples Maria Kirilenko in the 2nd round – Bank of the West Classic 2011
Thursday, 28th of July 2011, was the 2nd day of the second round of the Bank of the West Classic 2011. Both the players (Serena Williams and Maria Kirilenko) were oldfangled competitors and had
challenged each other quadruple times prior to this event. Serena survived a mid match lapse at the Taube Family Tennis Center and won the match 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 in almost 2 hours.
Their last run against each other was at Wimbledon this year, when Serena defeated her opponent 6-3, 6-2 in the third round at the Grand Slam event. They were meeting for the second time this year and Maria desired to quench her
loss, however, the Higher Power did not bestow the mercy of rain.
Meeting for the second time this year, Serena won the pitch and opened the set, with a powerful serve she hit three aces consecutively and the remaining two aces that she struck during the match had shattered her opponents defence
and her demeanour. She hit a number of fore hand strokes in a sagacious manner which made it difficult for her opponent to return her shots. Therefore, she was able to achieve twenty seven percent more total serve points than Maria. Additionally, her springy
back hand “kangoo jumped” the re-coiling shots that were aimed at her and won an above average forty eight percent of her total return points.
While, Maria was not able to rebound Serena’s shots and was dominated by her style of serve she (Maria) too had a decent serve and clenched fifty two percent of her total service points along with an insufficient twenty one percent
in her total return serve.
The American’s (Serena) performance was boosted by the crowd as they did a Mexican wave. Along with an offensive attack, she had a solid and stable defence that did not endorse a single opportunity to her opponent to break her
and instead broke her opponent twice.
Serena knew she had to extinguish her opponent in the second set but fate had something else in-store for her. The second set saw a complete change of events; it seemed as if someone had given Maria an energy drink to boost up
her performance, she smashed two aces along with winning a seventy one percent of her total serves. She won the set with only twelve percent more points than her rivals.
This was the set that would determine the winner of the match; Serena knew she had to win the set in order to win the match. Her performance in the third set was relatively better than the second set; She had a commendable sixty
one percent win in her total serve points and was able to smash another six aces that crushed her opponents defence. While her opponent had attained a mere forty three percent in her serve and also struck a double fault hitting the net.
Serena, on the other hand, had a solid and stable defence; she was able to convert three out of the eight break point opportunities and saved fifty percent of her own break points along with winning an exceptional fifty seven percent
of her total return points as she won the set and the match.
