Serena Williams vs Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova – Quarterfinal Preview: 2011 US Open
Former world number one and three times US Open champion will be taking on Russian sensation Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the quarterfinal of 2011 US Open here at Flushing Meadows in New York, United States. Since here return from
a foot injury; Williams has been toying with other players on the Women’s Tennis Association tour.
Coming to the US Open with titles at Toronto and Stanford, the American had her first wins after spending more than 11 months off the court due to various health and fitness problems. Seeded 28th at the WTA tournament,
Williams has been improving her game with every passing round and now she seems to be the only potential winner of US Open in Women’s singles draw.
Williams did not take too long dispatching Ana Ivanovic to book her place in the quarterfinal at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Centre in Flushing Meadows park on Monday. Earlier in the third round, she made quick work
of fourth seed Victoria Azarenka, who is a high profiled player. If she continued to play in the same fashion, she will be very hard to beat.
Apart from her sheer power and strength, Serena is known for her mental toughness as well. She can adapt to the conditions very quickly and she always finds ways of coming on top. The 29-year-old will be hoping for yet another
victory in the quarterfinal and she is of course the favourite to lift 2011 US Open title.
“It was so windy today, it was really tough,” said Serena, “I feel so blessed to be back. A couple of months ago I never expected to be here. I feel so honoured now and every match is a bonus. It's all so exciting.”
Her opponent, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova is also a great hard court player. Most of her victories have also been recorded on the blue surface as she strikes the ball really hard. The two players have met each other only once on the
tour prior to this meeting, which Williams won in three sets.
"She's just awesome and a great athlete and she's showing such good tennis so far. So I don't know what to say really," Pavlyuchenkova commented on Serena. "I don't just want to go out there and enjoy just being on the center court
playing against Serena. I would like to do well, try to fight, and with my effort I try to beat her. But I respect her a lot.
A very exciting encounter is expected to take place between the two players. Both players possess very strong backhand and forehand shots and it will come down to execution. Serena being the more experienced, is likely to win the
match in three sets.
