Serena Williams vs Sabine Lisicki– Semi-final Preview: Bank of the West Classic 2011
Day-7 of the Bank of the West Classic 2011 will see the two of the strongest female servers; former world number 1, Serena Williams and the current world number 26, Sabine Lisicki compete against each other at the Taube Family
Tennis Center, Stanford University, California.
Both the players have never experienced each other’s style and technique and will be meeting for the first time today, many tennis connoisseurs and critics are of the view that The American (Serena) has a competitive edge over
Lisicki due to her experience in the game. However, almost all experts assume that the 21-year-old German will meet her match (with regard to the accretive style of serving).
After the quarterfinal, when asked what she thought of her next opponent; this is what Serena had to say, “A lot of people probably underestimate her, she’s so strong, and she serves way harder than me. I’m so 2000.”
The 21-year old, was born on the 22 of September, Lisicki has won two WTA singles tournaments one in 2009 and the other in 2011. Even though, she missed seven months last year because of an ankle injury, this year she reached the
semifinals of Wimbledon Championships 2011. With an improved movement on the court and her serves; she hit 17 aces, and out of those seventeen; one at a speed of 124 mph, while, knocking off the French Open champion Li Na in the second round at Wimbledon 2011.
After a phenomenal grass court season Sabine made a comeback from dropping out of the top 200 rankings to becoming a world number 26.
Mean while, the 29-year-old Serena, has been out of the sport for most of the past year due to her foot injury. She fell from world number 1 to 169 and even though she has not contested in a number of tournaments this year, she
still managed to reach the fourth round at Wimbledon but lost to Marion Bartoli on the grass court.
Williams holds thirty seven Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) tour singles titles, she holds the title for most aces served by a female at Wimbledon in 2010, and last but not the least she has won thirteen Grand Slam crowns. Williams
is the fifth female player in the history of the sport to hold all four Grand Slams singles titles and the first women to hold all four Grand Slam doubles titles with sister, Venus since Martina Hingis.
Summing it up, there is more to Lisicki than what meets the eye, against Agnieszka Radwanska she won the match with the help of delicate drop shots. One must be alert when playing against Lisicki; she is one German that has a bag
of tricks up her sleeve.
Serena is a player that inaugurated a new level of power, skill, and technique. She is expected to move past the German in three sets.
