Serena Williams vs. Victoria Azarenka: Final match preview – US Open 2012
Top seeded, Victoria Azarenka, will contest against the American veteran, Serena Williams, in the final of the US Open 2012, scheduled to be played at the hard courts of the glorious Flushing Meadows Park in New York.
Williams took off her US Open campaign with a strong determination to pocket away all the winning opportunities and has successfully battled past all her rivals in straight sets. On the other hand, the right-hander Belarusian clinched
her spot next to Williams in the finals after a tough encounter against the Russian beauty, Maria Sharapova, in the semi-finals.
Azarenka talking to media said, “Towards the end of the first set I was getting a little bit better, getting more and more comfortable in the match. So even though I lost the first set, once it finished, I thought I could turn
it around and start from zero. Maria is such a great player - I knew she'd come out firing, and she did, placing the ball very well and not giving me an opportunity to get into the match. I don't want to leave - I want to play the final already! I guess I'll
have to wait a little, though.”
The former world number one, Williams, will face the Belarusian native for the 11th
time and she dominates the head-to-head series by 9-1. Earlier this season, she gave a shocking 6-1, 6-2 upset to Azarenka in the semi-finals of the London Olympic held at the All England Courts. Prior to that, Williams ousted her rival, 6-3, 7-6(6),
in the semi-finals of the Wimbledon Champions. At the US Open Championships 2011, the 28th seeded Williams prevailed over the Belarusian in the third round. Right-handed Azarenka trounced the American professional, 6-3, 6-1 for the only time in
the final of the Sony Ericsson Open held at the hard courts of Miami in the year 2009. The duo faced each other three times at the Australian Open and the American world number four successfully stood victorious in all encounters.
The 13-time Grand Slam winner and three-time US Open champion returned after her unexpected victory at the Wimbledon this year, she defeated the third seeded Agnieszka Radwanska in the final match, 6-1, 5-7, 6-2. Later, she marched
forward and crowned the golden trophy, giving Maria Sharapova a shocking upset, 6-0, 6-1.
The 23-year-old Belarusian topped the world chart with her superb form at the 2011 Australian Open. Although she lost at the hands of Williams in the semi-finals of Olympic Games, she moved forward to snatch the bronze medal from
the Russian contestant, Maria Kirilenko.
The encounter between the two will surely be the most entertaining encounter of the tournament, but a tough deal for Azarenka. The American tennis ace is desperate to secure the winning trophy and stamp an emphatic end to her current
year’s career.
