Serena Williams warns reporters form asking questions about her crip walk – Tennis News
Former world number one, Serena Williams, was seriously frustrated by the media representatives during a press conference just two days before the start of the US Open Championship. She was repeatedly asked about the ‘crip walk
dance’, the controversy that has rocked the world of tennis ever since the American has claimed the gold medal at London Olympics.
The post match dance from Williams at the end of the Olympics finale that witnessed straight sets 6-1, 6-0 battering of the Russian superstar, Maria Sharapova, displeased some of the viewers who considered it to be a racist act
by the fourth ranked American. However, it never seemed to be a taunt to anyone but a gesture of joy from the 30-year-old powerhouse.
Williams commented, “I don't know what was made too much of or whether it was too little. I think winning the Olympics was awesome for me and for the USA. I'm still kind of in the Olympic moment. I love the Olympics. I was just
so proud of the final tally of gold medals that I contributed to.”
She further added, “First of all, it was just a dance. I didn't know that's what it was called. Second, why are you asking me that? Like that's so ‑ I mean, if anything you should be trying to ask me questions to lift me up, not
bring up such things. I'm done with that question."
Williams is gearing up for the US Open Championship and considered to be the hot favourite to lift the second Grand Slam crown of the season after she bagged the Wimbledon Championships at the All England Lawn Tennis Club in June.
She has also completed a Career Gold Slam at London; only a second woman in the history of tennis to complete such a remarkable achievement. She is the only women to have won gold medals in singles as well as doubles category; definitely a player that is born
once in a lifetime.
So, a controversy against her can automatically gain a lot of hype and that is what media reporters are targeting to in order to enhance their readership. Williams didn’t like it and warned everyone to skip any questions like that
for now.
