Serena Williams whips Zheng Jie in the 3rd round – Rogers Cup 2011
Thirteen time grand slam winner Serena Williams played her third round of the Rogers Cup 2011 against Zheng Jie at the Rexall Centre in York University, Toronto, Canada. Williams came back from a set down to secure an imposing
win against the Chinese Jie and sent her packing back to China 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in two hours, fourteen minutes and twelve seconds.
Meeting for the first time in their professional career, the American (Williams) smashed 4 aces in one game and won the game without any opposition; however, in the next game she struck 2 double faults and lost two points, while,
Jie had struck an extra line fault and smashed zero double faults.
The 29-year-old, who usually is a powerhouse of serves, was not feeling her rhythm and let her opponent win the first set. She performed relatively poorly in her return; winning only 8 out of 30 points which put together were a
pathetic 27%.
Mean while, Jie had taken advantage of Williams poor returns and scored a 73% win in her total service points along with, acquiring 34% of her total returns.
Their some thing in the air that just didn’t click for Williams and she endorsed a break point to Jie, along with, only saving 3 out of 4 break points, she let her opponent break her once. Hence, Jie won 1 out of 4 break points
and managed to save a hundred percent.
The world number 82 won the set by accomplishing 33 points out of the 62 in her total service points and won by 6% more points in the first serve.
Since, Williams was playing Jie for the first time it took her a set to hack her opponent’s style and technique, and then there was no obstacle between the lioness (Williams) and her prey!
Taking a notch higher in her serve, Williams fired shot after shot like a machine gun and clogged 26 out of 42 points, making it a commendable 62% against Jie, who was barely attained 56% of her total service points in the set.
In addition, using her serve as a perilous weapon while at the same time placing and slicing drop shots enabled Williams achieved an average 44% in her total returns, whereas, Jie only bagged a deplorable 38% of her total returns.
Jie, who managed a pitiable 30 out of 67 points in her total set points and hence, was restricted to only 3 games, while, the American bagged 37 out of 67 points, making it an above average 55%. Serena seized the set with an ace
in just a few minutes.
The third set was another comprehensive victory for Williams, as she swayed through the second set, she set the tone for the third and by breaking her opponent three times out of the four, and she bagged yet another victory for
herself. Like an unstoppable force she battered her Chinese opponent by accomplishing 57% of her total service points.
Williams eased passed through Jie in three sets to reserve a place in the quarter final of the Rogers Cup where she will be facing the Czech Lucie Safarova.
