Serena Williams will not feature in Monterrey Open, starting next week – Tennis News
Another major blow for the American fans, as Serena Williams has incurred yet another injury in her early 30’s and is out of action for at least the Monterrey Women Tennis Association (WTA) tournament. She has twisted her
left ankle and will not take part in the next weeks contest according to the officials of the tournament.
Hernan Garza, the tournament director, sadly stated to the media representatives, “People in Serena's camp called my daughter Daniela and they said that they didn’t' even dare to call Serena after this happened.” Since last
year’s US Open tournament, Serena and her sister, Venus, have played the Fed Cup tournament earlier this month. They stayed out of action due to personal medical problems, with Venus later on proclaiming that she was diagnosed with Sjogren's syndrome.
Once again the American has caused problems for the tournament officials to decide the replacement in a week’s time with 60% of the tickets already sold in anticipation of Serena’s appearance in the tournament. This is not
something new; on most of the occasions these two sisters pull out of several medical issues at the last moment, making it extremely hard for the officials to cope with the criticism and replacement issues that erupt afterwards.
Serena was facing the ankle injury since her first comeback appearance in the season-opener at Brisbane, Australia. She limped into the Australian Open but was clearly limited with her shot selection due to a chronic ankle
injury that seemed to have left her for long during the Federation Cup tie against Belarus. She looked perfectly fine in the Fed Cup; was on top of her game ousting he opponents and diminishing any doubts about her health.
It seems like the aging factor is clearly pushing her down and injuries have surrounded her for quite some time. She is scheduled to play in Miami but the tournament officials must be alarmed after this mishap and there is
a possibility of someone replacing her in that tournament as well. The Miami event starts in the third week of March. It is definitely a sad time in her life where she can’t do what she loves the most, playing tennis.
