Serena Williams wins another WTA Player of the Year Award –Tennis Special
World number three Serena Williams has won the 2012 WTA Player of the Year Award.
She is one of the favourite American contenders and has a fair chance to become the world number one once again. She acquired the title after winning two Grand Slams i.e. at Wimbledon and US Open, alongside a gold medal in singles category at the 2012 London
Olympics.
In the 36-years history of the “Player of the Year” awards, the American challenger is one of the three participants who received the award more than once. According to the USA Today reports, only Steffi Graf has won the award eight times and Martina Navratilova
secured it seven times. Monica Seles, Lindsay Davenport, Justine Henin and Kim Clijsters won twice.
The American veteran had to undergo a tough tennis season because she was rehabbed a troubled foot in the year 2011. Due to this, she missed three straight Grand Slam titles in a row, which started at the end of 2010 and lasted until beginning of the next
season.
Williams’ started her year at a decent note and was not even in the top 10 charts. She received a straight sets shocker at the hands of the Russian challenger, Ekaterina Makarova, in the fourth round of the Australian Open. As the year advanced, her performance
improved to a major degree. She jumped forward to secure the lead against the world number one, Victoria Azarenka at the Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open.
The right-hander lost at the hands of the French rival, Virginie Razzano, in the first round. At that point, many critics believed that it was end of her tennis career. However, the American professional proved her worth at the Wimbledon Champion. She battled
through all the rounds with a strong resolve, displaying her remarkable resilience. She regained her former serving skill and completely turning the situation. With the aid of her sister Venus Williams, she pocketed away a title in the doubles category.
The right-hander American participant preserved her momentum in the London and struggled hard to dominate the entire time. In the semi-finals of Great Games, she outmuscled the Belarusian opponent, Azarenka, in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. In the final round,
beat the Russian Maria Sharapova.
Her pace dramatically improved at the hard courts. She took the maximum advantage of her home ground and sustained her momentum at the Flushing Meadows, bagging away her fourth US Open title. In the final round, she faced Azarenka again and after a three
set entertainer, Williams capitalized on the win.
Reigning world number three according to the WTA Rankings, Williams, has competed in the least tournaments than any other contestant in the World Top 20. She displayed an unmatchable tennis performance and completely silenced her critics by becoming one
of the best competitors in the world.
The 31-year-old, Williams, passion is still burning as she has no plans on quitting the sport like her compatriots in the business. If she moves on the right track, then it will not be a surprise if she wins another title in 2013.
