Serena Williams’s Crip Walk controversy continues to grow – Tennis News
World number four, Serena Williams, won her first singles gold medal at the London Olympics after dispatching the third seed Russian starlet, Maria Sharapova, in straight sets 6-0, 6-1. She thumped a bagel in the opening set and
coupled it with a breadstick to shut the shrieking Russian queen and thump her back into the closet.
It was a terrific performance from the 30-year-old American professional who has won 34 of her last 35 scheduled matches and enters the Rogers Cup in Montreal with a 17 match unbeaten run under her belt. It seems like no one can
stop the American superstar at the moment. Her form is invincible and the way she opens up the match with barrage of aces and closes it in the same fashion reminds of the good old days when the Williams sisters used to rule the world of tennis.
However keeping all her achievements apart, she did something towards the end of the gold medal conquest against Sharapova that is not liked by a lot of people on the globe; a ‘Crip Walk’. The debate is still on about the fact
that whether she should be criticized for such an overwhelming dance act in front of the Wimbledon crowd or not?
One of the argument against the Crip Walk was put forward b Jason Whitlock at Fox Sports who commented, “Williams "deserved to be criticized and she should've immediately apologized. What she did "was akin to cracking a tasteless,
X-rated joke inside a church." As a black woman, Williams "has never been given her proper respect at Wimbledon," and the Crip Walk was her "F-U revenge" to "give the snobs at Wimbledon a taste of the Compton girl they fear." The dance was "immature and classless,"
and she "deserved to be called out."
However, the other school of thought also exist. Emma Carmichael at Deadspin stated, “The Crip Walk "is almost universally used (and abused) by lots of people who are unaffiliated with the Crips, including white people intent on
embarrassing themselves on wedding and bar mitzvah dance floors."
Critics find a way out from every small act of players. It didn’t look like she was mocking someone or putting a statement to the crowd that is thought to dislike the black American legend. The hype is all over the cyber net and
people are assessing the move with their mindset. However, it will not being an inch difference to the results and Williams is an undisputed second woman in the world of tennis to complete a Career Gold Slam.
