Serena and Ivanovic win on French Open day two

Top seed Serena Williams has opened her 2010 French Open account with a 7-6(2), 6-2 victory over 76th ranked Stefanie Voegele in the first round.

Serena, who had chosen a less memorable outfit than sister Venus did for her opening match at Roland Garros, allowed the Swiss into the match in the first set with 17 unforced errors compared to 13 winners, but steadied in the second, making just five more unforced errors and finishing with a total of 28 winners for the match.

Ana Ivanovic was another former French Open champion to get off to a winning start on day two, as the unseeded Serb recorded a 6-3, 6-3 victory over 89th ranked Kai-Chen Chang in her opening match, despite serving down 12 double faults across its one hour and two minute duration.

The troublesome ankle that forced Caroline Wozniacki to retire from the quarter-finals of the Polsat Warsaw Open last week did not affect the third seed’s performance in the first round of the French Open.

The Dane looked to be moving freely around the court in her 6-0, 6-3 victory over Russia’s Alla Kudryavtseva in the first match of the day on Court Philippe Chatrier.

Elena Dementieva may have been bundled out by a player ranked 100th in the world in her opening match at Warsaw last week, but the 2004 Roland Garros runner-up bounced back from a disappointing clay court season so far to claim a convincing 6-1, 6-1 win over Croatia’s Petra Martic on day two of the French Open.

First up on Court Suzanne Lenglen was China’s Na Li, who overcame a spirited challenge from promising French teenager Kristina Mladenovic in her opening match, but the Australian Open semi-finalist ultimately wrapped up a 7-5, 6-3 victory.

Agnieszka Radwanska was another seed to win on day two, with the Pole at one point looking like she would deny Elena Baltacha a solitary game before the Briton fought back in the second set. The eighth seed ultimately moved through to the second round with a 6-0, 7-5 win.

Melanie Oudin, a surprise quarter-finalist at last year’s US Open, fell at the first hurdle at Roland Garros with Spain’s Anabel Medina Garrigues proving to be more at home on the dirt courts than the teenager, and moving into the second round with a 7-5, 6-2 win over the American.
