Serena pulls out of WTA Tour events in Istanbul Cincinnati and Montreal Due to Injury; US Open next?
Serena Williams is considered as one of the all-time best women tennis players. She is currently ranked at the top position as declared by Women Tennis Association (WTA) after winning the Wimbledon championship held in the month of July this year. Serena, after defeating Vera Zvonareva in straight sets in the Wimbledon final, was a favourite for the upcoming US Open tournament starting from August 30, 2010. However, her quest for her 14th Grand Slam crown might be in jeopardy, as recently she wounded her foot in a restaurant. The reports about her injury are still abstract, as the reasons and intensity of the injury are still unknown. Injuries are part of every tennis player’s professional career, but this wound has not come at the right time for Serena, as she is currently at the peak of her performance.
The 28 year old world number one tennis star had to undergo a foot surgery after her right foot was cut with a piece of broken glass in a restaurant last week. Her fans present all around the globe are disappointed, as the queen of the tennis court might not be a part of this year’s New York US Open. Not only this, but she will also not be a part of events in Istanbul, Cincinnati and Montreal this year. Missing the mega events of the year will also put her out of the form which she has been enjoying these days.
After winning the title of Wimbledon early this month, Serena played an exhibition match against the veteran ace Kim Clijsters in Brussels with an injured foot. Kim Clijsters was the winner of that match. Later, in a wedding of an NBA star, photographs of Serena showed two bandages on her left foot, which was proof that she was not physically fit to play major tennis events.
Currently, she is not in a position to walk comfortably because the cut is severe and doctors have advised her complete rest for at least two months.
After the terrible incident, Serena seemed frustrated and told the media that the misfortune happened at a very wrong time and she was very disappointed, and hopes to recover soon as she cannot wait to get back on the tennis courts. She said that she was upset because she wouldn’t be able to play in the upcoming tennis tournaments because of her foot surgery.
In the absence of Serena Williams, her sister (and World number 3) Venus Williams will try to play her place well. Venus Williams is also among the world’s best tennis players, but it will be a difficult assignment for her to perform at the level of her sister. Fans of Serena will now be looking at Venus to continue her legacy. No doubt, Venus has the skills and capacity to play and even surprise the spectators of the sport. Fans should hope for the best, as after all, one of the American sisters is still in the game.
