Serge Lilo and Jack Lam extend their stay at the Hurricanes – Super Rugby news
New Zealand Super Rugby franchise Hurricanes has extended the contracts of their loose forward Serge Lilo and flanker Jack Lam. Hurricanes head coach, Mark Hammett, has confirmed the new deals for both forwards in a statement released on Friday, July 8.
The players will have to appear before medical experts, as the contracts are conditional to medical clearance. Hammett handed over a one-year contract to Serge Lilo and a two-year contract to Jack Lam.
The Waikato born Lam has secured the two-year new contract following his impressive performance during his debut season with the Hurricanes in the 2011 Super Rugby Championship.
Hammett has expressed his hope that Lam will continue to work hard to perform and further develop his skills. He further added, “Jack was a consistent performer throughout the campaign and was a great team member. He had a great debut season and picked up the Rookie of the Year Award, voted for by his teammates. We are delighted that he has chosen the Hurricanes and look forward to having him back.”
The 26-year-old Serge Lilo has expressed his satisfaction at securing the extension in his contract and his stay at the Hurricanes. He made his Super Rugby debut for Hurricanes in 2006 against the Stormers. Since then he has made 35 appearances for Hurricanes and scored 20 points for the derby.
Lilo also plays for Wellington in the ITM cup. Since his debut for Wellington in 2005 against Auckland, he has made 45 appearances for the provincial side.
Wellington born Lilo termed the decision to stay at the club as an easy one. He further added, “I was brought up in Wellington and always wanted to be a Hurricane when I was young. Next year we will have a young team and there'll be some good players coming through which is going to be exciting.”
Hammett has also praised the personal attributes and skills of the Serge Lilo. He said, “Serge is a true warrior who will always give everything for the team and has great values as a person. He is one of those players who goes about his business quietly, without fuss, but is always in the heart of the action.”
Hurricanes are in process of rebuilding their team following the departure of some big names from their 2011 Super Rugby squad.
