Sergei Bubka overpowers Rogerio Dutra Da Silva to walk into main draw – US Open 2011
Working up with their best forms to play in, the US Open men’s qualifying 3rdround ended up with a drastic finish. Playing at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, Sergei Bubka, Ukrainian, won his 3rd round
qualifier 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 after beating Brazilian world No.112 Rogerio Dutra Da Silva.
It took Bubka 1 hour and 41 minutes to walk off with a win. Although there were a handful of spectators, the two played splendid and made the match worth a watch.
Playing on the outdoor Decoturf (hard court), two took on against each other for the second time. Previously the two had come across each other at the Karshi Challenger quarter-final; however, the fixture was cancelled due to bad
weather.
Bubka, 24-year-old, is currently ranked world No.210, however, his rankings does not speak for his talent. The right-hander is jam packed of exotic strokes using his forehand and mesmerizes the crowd with his quick runs.
Playing his previous 10 matches on hard circuit, the Astana Challenger Finalist had been successful on 7 occasions including his win in the final qualifier of the US Open.
On the other hand, Silva has been equally good on hard court, however, failed to make it to the main draws. Aged 27, the Brazilian is ranked at 112, 1 above his highest career ranking.
Despite the disparity in ranking, the Brazilian was kneeled down as the Ukrainian passed by with a win.
Kicking off with the match, Bubka served the starter and took out the initial game, 1-0. Serving second, Silva followed and leveled up the scores, 1-1. The scores levelled up again at 2-2 before Bubka started thrashing the Brazilian
breaking him twice and taking away the set 6-2.
Finishing off the first set in just 29 minutes, Silva took out the second set with a shocker. The two started off first with leveling at 1-1 then at 2-2, 3-3 and on 4-4 before the 27-year-old struck back with a breakpoint and took
out the final game winning 6-4.
Moving on with the final set of the match, the higher ranked Brazilian once again served, however, was bombed by breakpoints after the first two games.
Winning game 1, Silva took the lead followed up by the Ukrainian leveling up at 1-1. Silva then served and won game three and broke in game 4 to lead 3-1 before he was slammed down back on the ground.
Bubka turned the tables breaking the 27-year-old in game 5, 7 and 9, with back-to-back wins, and took away the match. It took the Ukrainian 28 minutes to bag a 6-3 win in the final set and winning the match 6-2, 4-6, and 6-3.
The 24-year-old sits in the main draw to play his first match of the US Open against Andreas Haider-Maurer later in the week.
