Sergei Bubka stuns Thomas Schoorel to reach the main rounds – BNP Paribas Open 2012
Unseeded Ukrainian, Sergei Bubka, registered an upset victory against the 14th seed Dutch contender, Thomas Schoorel, in the qualifying competition of the BNP Paribas Open on Wednesday. The 25-year-old Ukrainian took one hour and 55 minutes to wrap up victory at, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, earning a berth in the main rounds of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Masters 1000 event.
Bubka belted 10 thudding aces on his 64 per cent precise serve and claimed 36 out of 54 first serve points to root out the superior-ranked Dutch opponent to stun everyone. The crafty Ukrainian converted four out of his 15 break opportunities, while Schoorel registered three out of six break points in the entire matchup to end his voyage at the mega event.
Bubka drilled the seeded Dutch in the opening set to get one up early in the match but lost the next set to let him comeback. However, the 25-year-old Ukrainian got his winning momentum in the final set and closed out a convincing victory in style. He will face off against the former world number three, Nikolay Davydenko of Russia, in the opening round of the main draw.
Surprises kept coming and the second seeded German, Tobias Kamke, crashed out of the match at the hands of the Bosnian veteran, Amer Delic. The enthralling three-setter took almost two hours before the 178th ranked Delic concluded it 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, to advance into the main rounds of the star-studded even being played in Indian Wells, California, the United States.
Both men put up a gruelling competition to make it through to the first ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Masters Series event of the year. It remained a see-saw battle until the end, with Kamke fighting desperately to deny an upset outcome but he eventually had to submit the matchup later. He suffered an early shocker when his unseeded opponent snatched the opening set of the match to get one up. The second seed German regrouped to win the following set but couldn’t sustain his momentum in the decider to finish the matchup on the losing side. Delic will play against Dudi Sela of Israel in his next match.
