Sergei Bubka wards off death after horror fall – Tennis News
Ukrainian contender, Sergei Bubka, is lucky to be alive after falling from fourth floor of his apartment in Paris, France. He suffered multiple fractures but did not damage anything major.
Son of Ukraine’s former Olympic and world champion pole vault legend, Bubka fell from his fourth-floor apart in French capital. He suffered several fractures and was lucky o be alive.
"The circumstances leading to the fall were all so unlucky, but since the accident I feel I have been really lucky," the Ukrainian was quoted in an interview to www.atpworldtour.com.
Ranked 186th in the South African Airways ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour Rankings, Bubka was locked in the washroom. In an attempt to go out from window towards the room, the Ukrainian lost his balance and fell to the ground.
However, the Ukrainian rising star was lucky as his friends found him and took him to the near hospital for treatment.
Bubka commented afterwards:
"I was lucky to be alive and not have damaged anything major. I was lucky my friends found me and took me to a great hospital where they took great care of me."
Boyfriend of women’s number one Victoria Azarenka, the Ukrainian went through nine hours of surgery for recovery.
The former Top 150, Bubka enjoyed a drastic season this circuit. He failed to qualify for any of the four Grand Slam events and exited in the qualifying or opening round of several tournaments he participated. However, he managed to reach second round at
the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami through qualifiers and defeated Cypriot’s Sergis Kyratzis in straight sets at the Davis Cup.
Bubka raised the bar of his game in summer as he cruised to final four at the Winnetka Challenger (lost to local qualifier John-Patrick Smith in three sets). He managed to secure a spot in main draw at the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championship and
the Atlanta Tennis Championships before unveiling his true class at the Vancouver Challenger. The Ukrainian battled past his opponents including second seeded Dudi Sela before entering the final showdown. He bowed out to top seeded Igor Sijsling but climbed
several spots at the ATP World Tour Rankings.
