Sergei Fesikov and Allison Schmitt notch titles in Berlin: 2011 FINA World Cup
Russia’s Sergei Fesikov and United States’ Allison Schmitt performed well to clinch the freestyle titles respectively, at the 2011 FINA World Cup series in Berlin, Germany, on Sunday, October, 23. They captured the Men’s 50m and Women’s 400m freestyle titles,
respectively.
In the first race, 2009 European champion, Sergei Fesikov of Russia knocked out Italy’s Marco Orsi and Finland’s AriPekka Liukkonen by thrashing the finishing wall in a record breaking mark of 21.45 seconds to win the Men’s 50m freestyle title. After the
thrilling splash, Orsi claimed silver medal by hitting the finishing wall in a time of 21.52 seconds and Liukkonen settled for bronze title in a blot of 21.54 seconds.
The respective race produced some other impressive results, as Matthew Abood, 2011 world champion in 4x100m freestyle swimming went on to claim fourth position in a time of 21.56 seconds. Meanwhile, Stefan Nystrand of Sweden finished fifth by submitting
a time of 21.70 seconds and Steffen Deibler of Germany had to settle at sixth position in a spot of 21.77 seconds. The seventh place went to Ukraine’s Andrii Govorov in a mark of 22.01 seconds, while Tyler McGill of United States claimed eighth position in
22.03 seconds.
The final session of the meet saw another thrilling swim, as the double Pan Pacific champion, Allison Schmitt of United States went on to clinch the Women’s 400m freestyle title on the podium by hitting the finishing wall in a fastest mark of 3 minutes and
59.71 seconds.
Lotte Friis of Denmark claimed silver medal by submitting an impressive time of 4 minutes and 00.29 seconds, whereas, Chelsea Chenault of United States had to settle for bronze title in a spot of 4 minutes and 00.85 seconds.
In the meantime, Angie Bainbridge of Australia gave a matchless performance in the respective race and claimed fourth spot in a mark of 4 minutes and 01.38 seconds. In addition, Elena Sokolova of Russia picked fifth spot in a mark of 4 minutes and 04.14
seconds. Moreover, the sixth position went to Denmark’s Ostergaard Nielsen Mie in a time of 4 minutes and 06.51 seconds.
Cecilie Johannessen of Norway picked seventh spot by hitting the finishing wall in a time of 4 minutes and 06.56 seconds, while Jessica Thielmann of Great Britain settled for eighth position by posting a time of 4 minutes and 11.58 seconds. Finally, the
winners of the respective races, Sergei Fesikov and Allison Schmitt
were awarded gold medals along with cash prizes after the session’s completion. Singapore is set to organise the next round of the World Series from November 4-5.
