CSKA Moscow and Zenit St. Petersburg managed to progress from the group stages of UEFA Champions League, amking it two Russian clubs in the knock-out stage after many years.
The Russian Football Union president, Sergei Fursenko, has congratulated the Russian outfits upon their achievement and hailed the significant rise in the standard of Russian football.
Zenit managed to reach the knock-out stages for the first time in their history despite stiff competition from FC Porto and Apoel FC. A crucial point in the last group stage match away from home against Porto helped Zenit seal
the qualification.

“CSKA and Zenit have progressed to the later stages of the Champions League, It's a great achievement. The quality of the Russian championship along with the level of competitiveness between the clubs has significantly increased
over the time. The Russian outfits always aim for maximum results. The fans have supported us fabulously.” The former Zenit director general was quoted as saying.
He added: “I think that the European Championships are always tougher competitions. But Zenit and CSKA have come up with good results.”
Russian clubs failed to make it to the round-of-16 last season. Fursenko lamented the situation and urged the domestic clubs to step up in bigger competitions.
