Serging question?

I need to serge around a button hole on a shirt i'm making but i'm not sure how. Do you need to have a special attachment for doing it? I'm just not sure how to do it without having the blade that trims the fabric while ur serging cut the hole larger or any of the fabric. And plus i can't really fit the fabric under the needles because of the blade being in the way. Any help would be appreciated :]. Thanks a bunch!!

  1. I am pretty sure you have to have a special sewing machine to do this, one that doesn't cut fabric, and can sew in that special way that buttonholes have

  2. Doesn't your serger have a retractable knife so you serge without the knife when you want?  My serger is over 15 years old, and it has a retractable knife, and I have two friends with newer sergers, one a Brother and one a Janome, and their's both have retractable knives.

But, it would be much easier to serge around a buttonhole if your serger had an buttonhole attachment, or if you used a regular sewing machine's buttonhole feature.

  3. I don't have a serger and it's been a long time since I did a button hole.

In the old days, I think I used to just zig zag stitch around the button hole location and then snip the opening.

    Good luck

  4. my wife has a baby lock serger it has a button hole attachment.

  5. You can't make a buttonhole with a serge. You need a buttonhole attachment for a Regular sewing machine or you can do it by hand with a zig-zag of over cast stitch ;)))
