Sergio Aguero bidding to be fit for Barcelona clash
Atletico Madrid star Sergio Aguero revealed today that he is aiming to be fit for his club’s La Liga clash with Barcelona.
According to Spanish daily newspaper AS, the 22-year-old forward is undergoing a special fitness programme in a bid to face the defending champions after being stretchered off in the second half of the 2-1 win over Athletic Bilbao following an injury to his leg. Fortunately, Aguero’s condition is said to be improving quickly.
The Argentina international has no chance of being involved as Atletico kick-off the defence of their UEFA Europa League title against Greek outfit Aris Thessaloniki in the group stage of the competition. But both the player and the club are confident that Aguero will be ready to play some part in the visit of Barcelona on Sunday.
Scan revealed swelling
The injury sustained by Aguero in Saturday’s game initially appeared to be one which would keep him out of action for an extended period of time. However, a scan on Sunday confirmed that he had suffered swelling rather than a sprain.
He said at the time that, "I was at the Clinical Center of Madrid. I had a MRI that lasted about 20 minutes and after that, an x-ray. The doctors told me I have a bone edema, a swelling, and I have three days at least for recovery. It was a great relief that I will not miss any matches. Next Sunday is against Barcelona. I am very happy and thanks to all for all the messages of support.”
Aguero hopes to help Atletico sustain their winning streak in La Liga. They won their opening game against Sporting de Gijon 4-0 and, having claimed maximum points so far, are currently at the top of the league alongside Valencia.
