Sergio Gabriel Martinez: The rightful owner of the WBC middleweight title – Boxing Special
Sergio Gabriel Martinez is considered as one of the best middleweights in the world who has secured the number one spot in World Boxing Organisation’s rankings for a pretty long time. Despite several setbacks, the 37-year-old has not lost his grip over his
talent and capabilities.
According to a recent survey, Martinez is considered as the third best boxer in the world. Moreover, he secures third spot in the pound for pound rankings which proves that the ‘Maravilla’ is a true champion, who enters the ring to fight without any hesitance.
Sergio is currently scheduled to collide with arch rival and the man whom he has been following for almost a year – Julio Cesar Chavez Junior, the current WBC middleweight champion. The controversy between the top two middleweights in the world is quite
interesting and Sergio, every now and then, keeps on highlighting the reasons as to why he despises Julio Junior.
As per Martinez’s comments, Julio junior is a carefully made, in fact woven pugilist, who does not deserve to hold the title. Moreover, Sergio thinks that Cesar junior is an orchestrated brawler who did not even knew how to fight before Freddie Roach came
in.
Why does Sergio hate Julio so much? Well, the reason is not of a personal nature in fact is quite professional. Unfortunately, due to some unknown reasons Sergio was stung by the corporate people as a result, eventually, by the decision of the WBC, Martinez
was forced to vacate the title.
The story is quite frustrating and clearly proves that it was meant to just make Julio Junior the world champion. Sergio was scheduled to defend his title for the very first time against mandatory challenger Sebastian Zbik.
HBO, who was scheduled to organise and promote the bout, thumbed down Zbik as Gabriel’s opponent, the reasons for this are still unknown. Later on, after the passage of due time period, WBC vacated the middleweight title allowing Julio to fight for it against
an opponent to be decided.
Interestingly, the opponent chosen by HBO and Chavez junior camp was none other than but Zbik. The scenario irked Sergio seriously so much so that in order to lower the genuine champion’s rage, a new title WBC Diamond middleweight was made.
Sergio won it easily by collecting a technical knockout win over Sergiy Dzinziruk and since then has defended it against two top-notch pugilists Matthew Macklin and Darren Barker.
The aforementioned scenario is basically the reason why Sergio has been in rigorous pursuit of Julio junior and why does the world number one hates the current WBC middleweight champion.
Martinez is now eyeballing to put an end to the one-year chase that has hurt the Argentinean a lot especially as far as the career is concerned. Julio resides at the second spot in WBO’s rankings even then he tries to avoid Gabriel.
Furthermore, Julio has never fought with tough men like those taken on by Sergio. Another important aspect that makes Sergio the rightful owner of the title is the fact that he is heavily experienced and is always ready to take on opponents who have talent
and who can give him a tough time.
At the moment, the odds by all and sundry are in favour of Sergio Martinez. The duo will meet at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States on September 15, 2012.
