Sergio Gabriel Martinez as Julio Cesar Chavez Junior's next opponent – Boxing News
Sergio Gabriel Martinez, the former WBC and WBO middleweight champion, will defend his number one spot in World Boxing Organisation’s rankings against Julio Cesar Chavez Junior, the current WBC middleweight champion, in a 12-round bout, which will be held
on September 15, 2012.
The duo will headline the pay-per-view jointly organised and promoted by DiBella Entertainment and Golden Boy Promotions. The clash is being dubbed as one of the greatest in the middleweight division as both men secure top two positions in the world rankings.
Sergio, Julio Junior, the two promoters and trainers of the fighters, recently attended a press conference called on in order to promote the championship bout. During the press conference, some of the individuals adopted a lay low style, whereas Sergio and
Julio’s father exhibited a bit harsh and blunt attitude.
Martinez, the Argentinean proud, has been in a total of 53 bouts, boasting 49 wins, two losses and two draw decisions. The 37-year-old is well known as one of the best middleweights in the world who has literally swiped out almost the whole division.
The southpaw is coming off a pretty intimidating five-bout win streak attributed to his victories over like Matthew Macklin, Darren Barker, Paul Williams and others. Julio, 26, is also a talented pugilist who boasts an undefeated streak in a total of 48
bouts.
The young Mexican lad is often pronounced as a paper champion, a brawler who evades top-notch quality pugilists. During the press conference, while sharing his thoughts, Chavez Junior thumbed down the aforementioned absurd accusation.
Julio, who will defend his WBC middleweight for the fourth consecutive time, stated, “I have never avoided him I am ready to give the fans the fight that they want. Martinez is a great fighter with a difficult style but that is boxing, competition and I
want to beat the best and that road goes through Martinez.”
Sergio, while sharing his excitement about getting this fight, stated, “He was losing his credibility it was necessary, as well as for me also. He did what he had to do which is win the fight [against Andy Lee]. This was a fight I was looking for and the
opportunity was going away but we are happy that the fight is finally official.”
The rest of the fight card is still under consideration and more bouts will be added with the passage of time. The event will be televised live from Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States and will be on aired as HBO’s pay-per-view.
