Sergio Gabriel Martinez nails Matthew Macklin in 11th round and defends his gold – Boxing news
Sergio Gabriel Martinez, the number one pound-for-pound middleweight in the world, put forth the Madison Square Garden crowd an epic bout and brutally bloodied his Saturday night opponent Matthew Macklin to collect an 11th round knockout win.
The bout was scheduled to headline HBO’s ‘World Championship Boxing’ show and the event was promoted by Lou DiBella’s DiBella Entertainment. Sergio, the Argentinean ‘Maravilla’, is considered unanimously as one of the best middleweights in the world who
proudly secures World Boxing Organisation’s number one position. Martinez was entering in his illustrious career’s 53rd bout.
The 37-year-old veteran boasts a whopping 48 wins and 28 of them by knockout. Matthew, on the other hand, had the odds against him from the very beginning. Macklin, infamous as ‘Mack the Knife’, has been in a total 31 bouts and came out victorious in 28.
Despite all the abilities the 29-year-old Briton had in his gear, Mack was seriously outclassed in various aspects and the 4,671 spectators clearly witnessed Matthew’s loopholes.
In the first half of the bout, Matthew did put all his heart and effort and was successful in partially dropping Martinez on the ring floor in the seventh round but later on, Sergio’s impressive comeback shattered the young lad’s plan to grab a win over
a legend.
Sergio, admitted while speaking immediately after the bout that he followed the bit-by-bit strategy and chopped down Matthew’s strong defence which helped him in collecting an 11th round win.
With the end of the seventh round, Matthew was leading all the three score cards and apparently Martinez was nowhere to be found. The eighth round started and Sergio unleashed his attack and brutally pummelled Macklin in his own blood.
During the decisive 11th round, Matthew fell twice on the ring floor and after the lapse of just three minutes Macklin’s corner men intervened and asked the referee to halt the bout.
Macklin after the bout remarked that he threw every single drop of sweat and is happy that he did give Sergio the toughest bout of his career. Matthew commented, “The better man won tonight. I thought it was a close fight up until the last few rounds when
he pulled away. I think I proved where I belong tonight and that is in the top two or three. I don't think too many could give him this tough a fight.”
The proud Sergio who successfully retained his WBC Diamond middleweight gold excitedly shared his future ambition and said, "I want the belt. Chavez has the belt. I want a fight with the champion. I won it inside the ring, they took it, and I want to win
it in the ring (again).”
Sergio now has 49 wins in his resume and is eye balling the WBC middleweight gold whereas Matthew has collected his career’s fourth defeat.
