Sergio Garcia, Dustin Johnson eyeing the Olympics
Sergio Garcia and Dustin Johnson took some time off from professional golf and were busy in hitting purple golf balls over the make shift greens near river Thames. Both of them were excited about the prospect of golf returning to the Olympic Games after
more than 100 years.
The Spaniard, especially, was looking forward to playing in the 2016 Olympics in Brazil. Garcia was sharing his experience of the Barcelona Olympics of 1992, in which Team USA almost clean swept everything.
"Those moments stick," Garcia said. "After these Olympics go by it will be the one we are in and everyone will be talking about it".
Dustin Johnson was also very excited but he still felt that Golf has its own majors which should be the priority of a golfer, rather than an Olympic gold medal.
Johnson feels that it would be an honour to represent one’s country in the Olympics because these games are more than just winning – it is a special feeling that one experiences.
"I think it is going to be very special if I can represent my country," said Johnson, who is from the U.S. "Being an Olympian is more about being an athlete and being part of something more than just you".
There have been many debates and arguments presented over the years about whether sports, such Tennis and Golf, are to be included in the Olympics or not.
The argument is given on the basis that these sports have their major championships unlike the Track and Field events, which do not have their major tournaments during the year.
Some of the golfers have already said that they will not be taking part in the 2016 Olympics because they feel that golf should not be in the Olympic Games. Golf has its own trophies, the most decorated ones, so a player must focus on winning them, rather
than focus on the Olympics.
Garcia said that he would prefer a Silver Medal at the Olympics than finish second at one of the majors. However, Johnson had other views regarding it. He still felt that winning a golf’s major is more than winning a gold medal in the Olympics but he was
excited about the prospect of being an Olympian.
"It would be really cool to be part of the opening ceremony," Johnson said. "Really cool".
