Sergio Garcia commits to participate in the Iskandar Johor Open
Sergio Garcia, who clinched an important point for the European team in Sunday’s singles at the Ryder Cup this year, has confirmed to participate in the 2012 Iskandar Johor Open, presented by Iskandar Waterfront.
Garcia will be making his first ever start in the Asian Tour event, to be held at the prestigious Horizon Hills Golf and Country Club, from December 13 to 16, 2012.
The venue course will be hosting the event for third time in a row because of its reputation of providing state-of-the-art facilities.
The Spaniard is one of the biggest additions to the tournament that will feature a total of 120 players in the field this year.
He is currently enjoying a great form and is optimistic about performing well at the Asian Tour’s season-ending tournament.
Earlier this August, he stunned his opponents at the PGA Tour’s Wyndham Championship and recorded the 23rd professional victory of his career.
The win also played a key role in his inclusion in the European team for the Ryder Cup at the Medinah Country Club.
Otherwise, he was the least favourite to be picked as one of the two captains picks by the European Ryder Cup team Captain Jose Maria Olazabal.
At the Ryder Cup, he made his contribution by winning a point against Jim Furyk, which played a key role in the Europeans’ biggest comeback in the history of the biennial event.
At the end of the tournament, the Europeans managed to retain the trophy by defeating the US team by 14.5 points to 13.5.
Earlier, he participated in three of the four US PGA Tour Playoffs events and came close to another victory of the season, when he tied for the third position at The Barclays.
He now relishes the opportunity of playing in Malaysia for the first time in his career.
Talking to the Asian Tour’s official website, he expressed his pleasure of playing on the Asian soil. He stated that he always enjoys playing on the Asian circuit and also won two events there.
"Playing in the Iskandar Johor Open this year will mark my first time playing in Malaysia so I’m very keen to see what the course and country are like," he shared.
“I enjoy playing in Asia and have had some good results in that part of the world so I hope I can continue my current form to produce a good performance in December," said Garcia.
The tournament is regarded as the fastest growing event on the Asian Tour. Therefore, the Asian Tour Executive Chairman Kyi Hla Han is also expecting a successful staging of the event this year too.
“Our players always enjoy competing in Johor and we look forward to a successful conclusion to our 2012 season where we will crown the new Asian Tour Order of Merit champion”.
