Sergio Garcia eager for a win at the Iskandar Johor Open
Sergio Garcia has set his sights on ending the 2012 golf campaign on a high note by winning the Asian Tour’s season-ending Iskandar Johor Open.
The tournament will be played at the Horizon Hills Golf and Country Club, from December 13 to 16, 2012.
The Asian Tour event is known for attracting a world-class line-up, vying for a share of the US$2 million prize purse.
This year too, the tournament has reeled in some prominent names, including the likes of the current Order of Merit leader Thaworn Wiratchant, in-form Gaganjeet Bhullar of India, the three-time Order of Merit winner Thongchai Jaidee, and the reigning British
Open Champion Ernie Els.
Garcia, who won the US PGA Tour’s Wyndham Championship earlier this season, is another strong addition to the tournament this year.
The last tournament that the Spaniard played this season was the Ryder Cup, where he played a key role in European team’s victory over the United States team.
Afterwards, he had to stay away from the game, following his eye surgery to correct astigmatism. According to him, the doctors have now given him a green signal to start practicing on the range, prior to moving to Malaysia.
He is now relishing the opportunity to make his debut in the Iskandar Johor Open. Talking to the Asian Tour’s official website, the Borriol resident stated that he will try his best to mark a strong finish to his campaign this season.
Moreover, he revealed that he talked to Retief Goosen about the playing conditions at the Horizon Hills Golf and Country Club.
“I am going to go there and hopefully I am feeling good that week and I can fight for the victory. It would be great to finish the year strongly in Malaysia. With a win it will be amazing but if I can play nicely and have a good chance it will be a good
way to end the year,” said Garcia.
Garcia is regarded as one of the most successful players from Spain, having won eight and ten PGA Tour and the European Tour events, respectively.
Yet, he believes that there are a number of things that he needs to work on. According to him, there is always some room for improvement in one’s game.
Therefore, he will have to continue bringing improvements in his playing technique, in a bid to become one the most lauded golf players in the world.
“I’ve always have good putting rounds and stretches where I’ve putted well but consistency wasn’t great so that’s nice to have now. I think that the great thing about the game is that you can always improve, pretty much on every aspect of your game,” he
said.
