Sergio Garcia fails at The Players Championship and finishes tied eighth
Sergio Garcia faltered for a four-over par 76, in the final round of The Players Championship, to ruin his chances of adding another PGA Tour title to his resume, on Sunday, May 12, 2013.
The tournament was being staged at TPC Sawgrass, featuring some of the best players in the world, vying for a share of US$ 9.5 million prize fund.
Right from the beginning of the tournament, Garcia played amazingly well and surged to the share of the top spot, while entering the final round.
He then made a slow start, as he bogeyed the fourth hole on day four. A birdie on the very next hole allowed him to finish the front nine with an even-par score.
The back nine of the course witnessed him recording three birdies against a lone bogey over the first seven holes that he played. Entering the last two holes, he was still sharing the top spot with Tiger Woods.
However, he completely lost focus over his game and faltered for an unbelievable quadruple bogey on the 17th hole, followed by a double bogey on the 18th hole, to drop down to the share of the eighth position on the leaderboard.
“That hole has been good to me for the most part. Today it wasn't. That's the way it is. That's the kind of hole it is,” he said about the 17th hole.
Talking to the PGA Tour’s official website, he expressed his disappointment in ending his campaign poorly, especially when he had a great chance of recording a victory in the tournament.
He also said that he really wanted to record a victory, especially when he was in competition with the world number one Woods.
“Like I always said, you want to win every tournament you play on. Sometimes you do, sometimes you don't. And you want to beat everybody in that field, and if he's in that field obviously you want to beat him. It's always nice to have a chance at beating
the No. 1 player in the world, but unfortunately for me I wasn't able to this week,” he said.
