Sergio Garcia feels intimidated with the strong opponents in the Volvo World Match Play Championship
Resurging Sergio Garcia is eager to land the elusive Volvo World Match Play title this week especially considering the fact that he will be playing on his home course.
The rampaging Spaniard however, is weary of the fact that the opponents in his group are formidable challengers when it comes to Match Play format.
Being the top-seed in his group might come as a reassurance to move to the last eight on the final day, Garcia is not ready to underestimate his opponents and will be offering his best in the opening rounds.
He said, “I'm looking forward to it. I just hope that I can get my game in good shape for tomorrow, and have a couple of good days to qualify for Saturday and then we'll see what happens”.
Garcia will be playing alongside Alvaro Quiros and Japan’s Tetsuji Hiratsuka in the Ian Woosnam group and considers both players as tough foes in the unpredictable knock out format.
He added, “Obviously Alvaro I know very well, and he's a great player. With his game, he'll be tough to beat. Hiratsuka, I have not played with him that much, but obviously we know the potential that the Japanese players have, so it will be another competitive
match”.
Garcia brought a successful end to his winless streak last season when he landed two consecutive titles on his home course, the Castello Masters and the Andalucía Masters to regain his position in the top-50 on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR).
His Masters bid culminated with a joint 12th this  year and Garcia was so dejected with his performance that he went over to state that he does not deserve to win the coveted green jacket.
Playing on the home course makes an otherwise ever-grinning Garcia a formidable player who will be tee-ing off with tons of experience of the sprawling Finca Cortesin.
The 24-man field will be divided into eight groups of three players each who will wrestle their way up the leaderboard in the opening two days of the event.
The Saturday’s event will feature top 16 players who have qualified and will play further Four Ball to qualify for the last eight on the final day.
The event marks 147th tournament sponsored by the automobile manufacturer Volvo.
