Sergio Garcia fires four-under par 68 in the second round of the Masters to tie for the second – Golf News
Sergio Garcia fired a four-under par 68 in the second round of the Masters Tournament to finish one stroke off the lead set by Jason Dufner and Fred Couples at the Augusta National Golf Club.
Garcia carded a total of six birdies against two bogeys to jump from the 29th place to tie for the third on the leaderboard.
The four other players who shared the third spot with him were, Bubba Watson, Rory McIlroy, Louis Oosthuizen and Lee Westwood.
Lee Westwood is currently looking for the first major title victory of his career through the Masters Tournament.
Both the players entered the field with an aim to prove their mettle of being worthy to be called as great players.
There was a time when Garcia was chasing down Tiger Woods on top of the Official World Golf Rankings through a win in the US PGA at Medinah.
However, he was never going to win that because of his bad luck in the major events. With the passage of time, he consistently outshined his opponents in different tournaments around the world.
Yet, he never succeeded to make a good run in the major event. However, this year’s Masters has seen a totally different player who has the ability to win the event.
He looked composed while he reeled off four birdies on the first eight holes he played. His performance is further laudable as he suffered a nagging injury last week. Moreover, he is playing the event with an infected nail.
The infected nail can really cause him troubles as he himself admitted that he was having difficulty in holding the club firmly. He is currently wearing a bandage on his finger to avoid the infection from becoming worse.
The same infection forced him to withdraw from the US Open qualifier last year. This year, he decided to move on with the injury and proved his worth in the field.
On the other hand, Fred Couples had the best round of the day, as he carded five-under par 67 to jump to the top of the leaderboard. He scored a total of seven birdies against two bogeys.
