Spaniard Sergio Garcia makes a comeback in Transitions Championship – PGA Tour News
Sergio Garcia will be hoping to make some improvement in his game and world rankings in the Transitions Championship. The Spaniard has lost his ranking and moved out of the top-50 for not performing well in the past two years.
For a player who played exceptionally well three years ago and is now not even considered a top contender for the tournament, it would be rather frustrating.
This will be Garcia’s first PGA Tour tournament appearance in seven months. He has been working very hard on his putting which has let him down a couple of times. His fans expect him to perform much better and be on the leader board after the first day.
The 31-yeard old has been among the best strikers of the ball; it is his short game which has been a great setback for him over the years.
Sergio’s career has always been up and down. The Spaniard has won seven PGA Tour and eight European Tour victories and has a lot of experience playing against the best.
Garcia after playing the practice round said, "I definitely feel like I want to be out there. So that always helps. A couple of things off the golf course didn't help. And then I just started playing not great. Knowing how I can play and what I'm capable of doing, I don't like to settle for less."
In 2008, Garcia was ranked second and had the chance to replace Tiger Woods as World number 1, but failed to do so. In November 2008, Garcia also won a tournament of HSBC Champions in a playoff against Oliver Wilson. Since then, he has been on a downward spiral, with his rating slipping to a disappointing No. 85.
Italy’s rising star Matteo Manassero is also one of the players featuring in the Transitions Championship. The Italian will be the youngest player on the field. Manassero was also the youngest player who made the cut in last year’s Masters.
The 17-year old has already proved to many that he has the capability of competing against the best in the world. Manassero posted his maiden victory last year in Spain; he played exceptionally well in the WGC-Accenture Match Play championships and won against the experienced veteran Steve Stricker.
Manassero is hoping that he can finish among the top ten on the leader board after the final round on Sunday so that he can improve his world rankings and move among the top fifty. This will secure him a confirm spot in next month’s major Masters tournament.
Manassero and Garcia will be up against the World no. 1 Martin Kaymer and defending champion Jim Furyk. The competition will be a fierce one and some fireworks are expected.
