Sergio Garcia makes a decent start at the Iskandar Johor Open
Sergio Garcia of Spain carded a seven-under par two-round score, to mark a decent start to his campaign at the Asian Tour’s season-ending Iskandar Johor Open. The tournament is being played at the Horizon Hills Golf and Country Club.
Due to unplayable conditions on day one, the world number 20 was not able to complete his first round. He played only three holes prior to the inclement weather forced the game to be suspended.
As a result, he had to return to the course, early in the Friday morning, to finish his opening-round campaign.
He then carded five birdies against a lone bogey to finish five strokes behind the first-round leader David Lipsky, who fired a nine-under par 63.
In the afternoon, Garcia started his second round on the back nine of the course. After carding five birdies on the first 11 holes that he played, he surged to the top of the leaderboard.
However, the Ryder Cup star failed to keep the momentum going into the final hole, and conceded a double bogey, which dragged him out of the lead.
Despite finishing poorly, he was pleased with his overall performance in the first two rounds. He said that he will try to bring consistency in his game, in a bid to end the week on top of the leaderboard.
“It was good. It has been a long day but it has been quite positive. I just hope I can keep going in the right direction and see what happens. Hopefully we will get lucky and can get all four rounds in,” he said.
Talking to the Asian Tour’s official website, he also stated that the weather delays did not have any effect on his performance in the tournament. According to him, he was expecting the suspensions, because of the climate of the region.
“I did well before and after the breaks so overall it is what it is. You got to realize that the weather is like this and you got to deal with it,” said Garcia.
He added, “It can be frustrating if you let it but there is nothing you can do about it. You just need to chill... and relax”.
