Sergio Garcia makes a good start at the Crowne Plaza Invitational
Sergio Garcia carded a four-under par 66 in the opening round of the Crowne Plaza Invitational to share the sixth spot on the leaderboard on Thursday, May 24, 2012.
Garcia got off to a solid start, as he recorded two back-to-back birdies on the first two holes (10th and 11th) he played.
Another birdie on the par-four 15th hole took him to three-under for the round. On the front nine of the course, he made a better start and managed to record an amazing eagle to get close to the clubhouse leader Zach Johnson.
However, a bogey on the par-four third hole forced him to settle two strokes behind the lead at the end of the round.
“I got it to 5 and unfortunately I three-putted the third,” he said. “But then I made a couple of nice par 5s. So overall I cannot be disappointed with that round”.
He also told that he was lucky to save par on the ninth hole and finished the way he wanted.
Yet, he believes that a birdie on the final hole could have made a difference but he was happy, especially when he had very few chances of turning the ball in while making the par putt.
“It's always nice, it's obviously nice to finish with probably a birdie than a par,” he said. “But obviously, after the second shot to be able to save par there it just gives you a little bit of a good taste in your mouth, obviously. If I would have missed
it, 3 under would still have been a nice round but the feeling would have been a little bit worse”.
According to him, the par-five holes can play an important role in recording low scores throughout the tournament.
He succeeded in breaking the par on both the par-five holes and went three-under with the help of a birdie and an eagle.
He also told that the winds did not blow the way he expected them to. Yet, he admitted that he faced a little difficulty on some of the holes when it was difficult to predict the direction of the wind.
