Sergio Garcia makes strong comeback in Transitions Championship – Golf news
Sergio Garcia made a strong comeback in the Transitions Championship where he smashed a score of 6-under par 66 in the second round to take the second spot on the leaderboard.
The $5.5-million purse event is taking place at the par-71 Copperhead Course in Tampa Bay.
The 31-year-old kicked off with a slow pace in the first round, as he wanted to get himself familiar with the course. However, with the start of a new day, the Spaniard accelerated his pace and fired five birdies without dropping a shot to compile an aggregate
of 8-under par. He is one of the few players in the field whose 36-hole scorecard does not have any bogeys.
The Spaniard needs two more perfect rounds to end his winless drought, which has now stretched to 27 months. Garcia claimed his last victory in the Players Championship in May 2008 at the Stadium Course. He then defeated Paul Goydos in a play-off match,
when he parred the first hole.
Garcia seems hungry for the same kind of victory. He told this to the press on Friday after he shot another bogey-free round.
He said, “Just keep trying to do the right things and see what we finish. I am not worried about winning. I just want to keep building confidence into my head, and these rounds obviously help.”
Moreover, he is the only hope Spain has and he has to prove himself by either winning the title or finishing in the top three. The Spaniard realises that, which is why, he is feeling the pressure. The pressure can help him retain the pace, but at the same
time, it can have a negative impact on his game.
Probably this was the reason he was seen struggling with the putter. He relished decent stats in putting average, but was not happy with it. He said, “It's not like I didn't putt well the other way, but I felt like I was a little bit inconsistent, hit a
lot of good ones but some really bad ones.”
Garcia has stepped into the weekend with a second spot finish. If he remains consistent, as this is the trait lacking in the entire field, he would have a good shot on the victory.
