Sergio Garcia missed the chance of second victory in succession at The Barclays
After winning the Wyndham Championship, Sergio Garcia came close to his second victory in two weeks, when he missed out the chance, after posting a four-over par 75 in the final round at The Barclays, to tie for the third position.
Garcia had a two-stroke margin over Nick Watney, heading into the final round. However, he failed to maintain it, as he went completely out of his focus on Sunday.
He started off with a bogey on the very first hole that he played. He then managed to par each of the next four holes prior to recording the only birdie of the day on the sixth hole.
Afterwards, he played poorly for four bogeys and gifted the victory to Watney, who carded a two-under par 69 for a 10-under par tournament score.
“I didn't play the way I know I can play, or I was playing,” he admitted. “I hit some good shots, but you know, I hit a couple bad shots at the wrong moments. And unfortunately I just wasn't feeling comfortable”.
According to the Spaniard, the greens were really slow compared to the opening two rounds and he struggled to convert the birdie chances because of the miscalculations.
“I struggled a little bit with ...some of the shots, and you know, it's kind of simple as that,” he said.
“I obviously struggled with the speed of the greens. They were much slower today. Even though they still looked very brown …they put a bit of water on them to not lose them ...I just struggled to get the speed of the greens early on when I had three or four
good chances for birdies”.
Despite losing in the final moments of the tournament, Garcia wanted to take the positives out of his performance and stated that he was happy to be in contention the last two weeks.
However, he will now focus on improving certain things that hindered his second victory of the month and the season.
In the meantime, Watney has created himself some chances to be selected for the US Ryder Cup team after winning one of the elite tournaments on the PGA Tour.
The US Ryder Cup team captain Davis Love III will choose his four captains’ picks next Tuesday.
