Sergio Garcia on his way to victory at Farmingdale
Sergio Garcia of Spain is on his way to secure the second successive title after he took the lead at The Barclays, Bethpage, on Saturday. Garcia currently leads the tournament by two strokes. Following him is Nick Watney.
Sergio shot a steady 2-under par 69 to claim the lead, whereas Nick is also lurking behind him. The Spaniard, who got in to the European Ryder Cup team after the victory at Wyndham, has suddenly found his touch after a quiet 2012 season.
Tiger Woods faltered on the day when he needed to step up his game. Once again it was his putting that gave him the most trouble. He three putted four times and that clearly showed the way he was putting in the third round.
Woods could have claimed his number one spot with a victory at The Barclays but that looks improbable now. He criticised the way greens were set up, he thought they were too fast to handle.
"I have never seen greens change like this, from what they were yesterday to today," Woods said. "It is unbelievable how slippery they were. You put the putter down behind the golf ball and it was slipping on the grass. It's unbelievable how fast they got".
Garcia also had a tough going on the greens. He bogeyed twice but on the back nine, a spree birdies ensured that he remained at the top.
He too felt that the greens were pretty fast but as they say, all is well that ends well.
"The greens are just probably some of the fastest greens I have ever played," Garcia said. "Usually when you are putting on fast greens, you have an idea where the ball is going to stop."You thought the ball was going to stop two feet behind the hole, and
it went six”.
Nick Watney is just two strokes behind the Spaniard but the way Sergio is playing, he knows that fortunes must favour him if he is to win. Watney hopes to hang in just around Sergio and a few mistakes here and there by Garcia could mean that Watney may lift
the title.
This is a very close call to give, as this year there have been many ups and downs on the last day. One thing is for sure that fans would be treated with some thrilling golf.
