Sergio Garcia secures Ryder Cup berth after success at Wyndham
A magnificent Sergio Garcia won the Wyndham Championship by two strokes, having shot an 18-under par overall score. The rain delayed tournament moved onto Monday for the final round. Garcia took the opportunity and shot a brilliant 66 in the final round.
The tournament was halted midway through the final day. There was consistent down pour and many players still had to finish the round.
When the play stopped, there were around seven players just three shots adrift of Garcia but the organisers decided that the play will be postponed till Monday.
It was Sergio’s first PGA Tour victory in four years. He has not only earned $936,000 in prize money but, more importantly, he is now certainly guaranteed a berth at the Ryder Cup.
The change of caddie after the PGA Championship did indeed work for Garcia, as he managed to win a tournament after a span of four years. He also clinched a six straight berth at the Ryder Cup.
His victory means that Ian Poulter will now have to sweat over his place, as he was knocked off the top-ten automatic qualification spots.
"I think there were a lot of things going on. It shows a lot to me," Garcia said. "Hopefully, this will secure my spot on the Ryder Cup team, and winning is always nice".
Ryder Cup means a great deal to Garcia and this victory has ensured that he continues to follow his dream.
The Spaniard last played at the Sedgefield back in 2009, where he was in the lead, going into the last round. In 2009, he was leading by three strokes midway through the final round, when he suddenly lost control over his game.
"That year, I was pretty much in control, and I lost it myself," Garcia said. "The course didn't do anything wrong to me".
South African Tim Clark, who was a local boy, surprised everybody with his second place finish. Clark, who had played for North Carolina State, had some local support but the way Garcia was playing, it was always difficult to catch the Spaniard.
"It was going to be tough to catch (Garcia), the way he finished," said Clark. This second place finish now means that he has earned himself a place in the playoffs.
