Sergio Garcia sets his Olympics goal
London is, at the moment, gripped with Olympic fever and just after the Open, Sergio Garcia and Dustin Johnson were promoting golf. Since 1904 Olympics, golf has never been part of the games.
However, three years ago it was announced that golf will once again take place in the Olympics from 2016, in Brazil. Garcia and Dustin Johnson were hitting golf balls on the artificial green beside river Thames.
When asked about the prospect of golf in Olympics, Garcia said, "I think it is great," the Spaniard told Sky Sports News HD. "I really hope I can make the team as I'm very excited about it".
"It would be an experience that is very, very unique for a golfer to play in the Olympics and even to win it would be even better".
It was a tremendous effort by the three greats of golf, Colin Montgomerie, Jack Nicklaus and Annika Sorenstam, that the International Olympic Committee decided to include golf in the Olympics.
Garcia, alongside Johnson, feels that representing one’s country is way better than playing for one’s own pride. However, there was a slight difference of opinion between the two.
The Spaniard thinks that winning an Olympic medal is way better than winning a major championship on the Tour but the American somewhat disagreed.
"For me, I really want a major," he stated. "Obviously it is the first time golf's been in the Olympics for over 100 years so it is certainly different", said Dustin.
"I think being part of the Olympics is more about being an athlete, being an Olympian and representing your country so it's hard to compare to a major".
Garcia hopes to qualify for the 2016 Olympics by putting up some commendable performances. Playing the Games was always one of his dreams and in 2016, most probably, it will come true.
It will be a different feeling for all the golfers featuring in Olympics because in individual sports such as squash, tennis and golf, nationalism does not come into play.
However, when the Games begin in 2016, every golfer will be looking to bag the gold for his country, not for himself.
