Sergio Garcia shares the 10th position after day one of the Thailand Golf Championship
Sergio Garcia of Spain carded a three-under par 69 in the first round of the Thailand Golf Championship, to take the share of the 10th position on the leaderboard, on Thursday, December 6, 2012.
The two-time Asian Tour winner could not pull off an impressive show of his skills on day one at the Amata Spring Country Club and missed several chances to score well.
According to the golf commentators, the Spaniard is regarded as one of the hot favourites for a win in the second last tournament on the Asian Tour roster.
Garcia started his round on a high note, as he carded birdies on four of the first seven holes that he played. He then added another shot to his scorecard on the 11th hole.
Entering the last five holes of the day, he was five-under for the round. He, however, faltered on the 14th hole and conceded a bogey.
Thereafter, he launched a birdie to offset the bogey impact. However, a double bogey on the 16th hole ruined his overall score, and he finished four strokes behind the pace set by Charl Schwartzel.
Commentators believe that Garcia is likely to make a strong comeback in the second round. The Spaniard holds past experience of playing at the venue course, as he also participated in the inaugural edition of the tournament last year.
Therefore, it will not be an uphill task for the Borriol, Castellón resident to improve his position on the leaderboard.
“Played nicely, started nicely but got a little unlucky on the second. Struggled a little on the back nine. Hit a few bad shots here and there. Hit it into the rough three times but every time I was in there, it was horrendous lie and I could only advance
it 15 or 20 yards farther,” Garcia said.
“There’s still three rounds to go. Hopefully I can play a little bit better tomorrow and shoot a good score and get myself in a good position for the weekend. I need to hit the ball a bit better than on the back nine for sure,” added the 32-year-old.
