Sergio Garcia struggles in the 2012 Cadillac Championship – Golf News
Sergio Garcia was once poised to become the world number one with a win in the 1999 WGC-American Express Championship (former name of the Cadillac Championship).
However, he is struggling in the same event this year with 75, 74 in the opening two rounds to settle tied for the 68th place on Friday, March 9, 2012.
He is playing among the group of former number one, Tiger Woods, and defending champion, Nick Watney.
In both the rounds he could not play well, as he was seen having problems in his swing. Moreover, he made several bad shots.
He was standing at nine strokes off the lead set by Adam Scott and Jason Dufner in the opening round.
The difference has now increased to 17 strokes against the new leader, Bubba Watson, who has a 12-under par overall score.
Garcia is now out of the contention for the top position in the event unless he displays some miraculous performance in the final 36 holes of the second WGC of the year.
“It was a combination of a couple bad swings here and there and then a couple of bad breaks, and it just seemed like I couldn’t turn it around,” García was talking about his first round performance that shattered his confidence that affected his second
round performance too.
“It just kind of snowballed on me. When you make a couple of bogeys because you hit bad shots, it’s fine, but if you’re hitting good shots and you keep making bogeys, then your trust starts kind of going away a little bit and that’s what happened on the
last couple of holes,” he added.
According to Garcia, he is still the same person who once had the chance of taking down the world number one of the time, Woods, while he was playing the PGA Championship in 1999.
However, he said that his approach has definitely changed over the years, as he now has more experience and sees things differently.
While talking about Rory McIlroy, the current world number one, he said that he is a world class player and reminds him of his younger times, when he used to have the same kind of confidence and potential.
