Sergio Garcia upbeat about his performance in the Iskandar Johor Open
Sergio Garcia of Spain has set his sights on ending his 2012 golf campaign on a high note, by winning the Asian Tour’s season-ending Iskandar Johor Open, slated to start from Thursday, December 13, 2012.
It will be the first time that Garcia will tee off in a professional event in Malaysia. The tournament will be staged at the Horizon Golf and Country Club, offering a total prize fund of US$2 million, to the participants.
The Iskandar Johor Open is known for attracting some of the best players each year, from different parts of the world.
This year too, the event has reeled in some prominent names, including the likes of the Asian Tour Order of Merit leader Thaworn Wiratchant, the reigning British Open champion Ernie Els and the two-time major champion John Daly.
According to this year’s entry list, a total of 120 players will contend against each other in Johor Bahru.
Garcia, who is currently enjoying a great run of form, recorded a fourth-place finish at last week’s Thailand Golf Championship.
He also finished tied for the ninth position, at the European Tour’s season-ending DP World Tour Championship.
In addition to that, he won the PGA Tour’s Wyndham Championship in August, and played a key role in European team’s success in the 2012 Ryder Cup.
According to the golf commentators, the 32-year-old will be among the hot favourites to record a victory at the Asian Tour event.
Talking to the reporters, Garcia said that he was really thrilled to confirm his participation in the event in Malaysia.
“This will be my first time playing in Malaysia, so I am very excited about it. I know golfers who have played in the tournament before, like Retief Goosen, so I have been told great things about it,” said the two-time Asian Tour winner.
“I am excited to see the golf course and enjoy my week there. It should be a great way to end the year for me,” added the Spaniard, who also won 10 European Tour titles in his career. “The goals are simple, I am going to go there and hopefully I am feeling good that week and I can fight for a win”.
