Sergio Garcia utilizes home advantage to grab lead at Castelló Masters in Spain
Sergio Garcia surged to the top of the leaderboard in the second round of the Castelló Masters, playing amidst a strong support from his home crowd, pulling in a stunning eight-under, 63. Having an overnight score of four-under, Garcia decided to go all-out
with his tons of experience to take the better off the field at the warm and breezy Club de Campo del Mediterráneo in Valencia, Spain.
Having had all sorts of troubles ranging from finger injury to deteriorating form, Garcia is in search of a victory for a considerably long period of time and is now seeing a silver streak in the dark clouds.
"It's getting there," he said. "It's not quite there yet - sometimes I have a little bit of a hard time hitting a draw, but when my little fade works out I can keep it in play. At the weekend I’ll try to hit good shots, to putt well and I’m going to do my
utmost.”
Garcia carded seven birdies and a blistering eagle at par-five, 8th to finish with an aggregate of 12-under, 130, two shots clear of the nearest contender Alexander Noren. The Spaniard is working for a possible victory in the upcoming season to
confirm his participation in the Ryder Cup.
Noren, the two-time winner on the European Tour in the current year and a strong contender for next year’s Ryder Cup, started off the day with excellent putting on the front nine, scoring six birdies in 12 holes. He had to settle for an outright second,
giving into Garcia’s ruthless rampage.
"I played probably the best I've ever played on the front nine." said Noren. "It didn't feel that good on the range. But I found my swing and holed a lot of putts.”
Further down the leaderboard, group of three players Ross McGowan, Marcus Fraser and Gary Orr are tied for the third place, four shots behind the lead. McGowan who shot a massive round of 64 on the first day, stumbled on two consecutive bogeys on front nine
to lose his composure. He carded three birdies in the rest of the 18-hole stretch finishing for a disappointing one-under, 70.
