Sergio Garcia vows to bag the Volvo World Match Play title at Finca Cortesin in May
The dejected Spaniard Sergio Garcia, has finally collected himself to get back in the tournament mode after a disappointing run at the Masters earlier in the month.
His fall at Augusta National wasn’t as catastrophic as his remarks about himself later where he called himself a “good for nothing golfer” who does not deserve to win a major title.
The 32-year-old Spaniard was coming out of a strong season back in 2011 when he brought an end to his winless drought which had been overshadowing him for two consecutive years.
He won back to back events on his home turf, the Castello Masters and the Andalucía Masters to get back in the winning groove for the next season.
Heading into the first major event of the year, Garcia wanted to bag the title which has eluded him so often in his career. He fell for a disappointing joint 12th.
Winner of 22 professional titles in his grizzled career, Garcia will be returning to Finca Cortesin to bag the upcoming Volvo World Match Play Championship.
He said, “It is tough to qualify for such an elite field so I am delighted to have won my place in the Volvo World Match Play field for next month. I am hitting the ball really well and the confidence is coming so I am looking forward to playing at Finca
Cortesín very much. As everyone knows, I love match play and even more, I love playing in Spain in front of my home fans, so I think this will be a great week for me”.
The 24-member field consists of defending champion Ian Poulter, World Number Ten Justin Rose, reigning Open Champion Darren Clarke, 2010 US PGA Champion Martin Kaymer, two-time Major winner Retief Goosen, 1999 Open Champion Paul Lawrie and 2010 Ryder Cup
player Peter Hanson.
This will be the 47th edition of the event and the scenic Finca Cortesin will be once again under the limelight of international channels and media.
The 24-member field will be divided into eight groups of three players each who will play the initial rounds. Top-16 qualifiers will then proceed to the next rounds and the final on Sunday.
Garcia will be accompanied by his fellow countrymen Alvaro Quiros and Rafael Cabrera-Bello. Both players have done well so far in the season.
