Sergio Gutierrez-Ferrol crushes Kamil Capkovic in opening round – AON Open Challenger 2012
Spanish contestant, Sergio Gutierrez-Ferrol, stomped over the Slovakian contender, Kamil Capkovic, with a breadstick at the AON Open 2012 on Tuesday. He penned down a 6-4, 6-1 victory against the 26-year-old to progress into the round of 16 at this outdoor
clay court tournament held in Genoa, Italy.
The unseeded Spaniard needed almost one and half hour to overpower Capkovic in their first encounter. As a result, he comfortably booked a spot in the second round at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event.
Gutierrez-Ferrol strongly stepped into the Italian courts and held his opening serve with conviction. He drew the first blood in the sixth game and jumped to a 4-2 lead. Regardless of losing his edge in the seventh game, the Spaniard broke Capkovic’s serve
again in the last game and clinched the opener with a 6-4 score line.
Ranked 219th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Gutierrez-Ferrol swayed from his path towards the following set and suffered the first blow in the opening game to trail at 0-1. However, he unleashed flurry of groundstrokes and
reeled off six games in a row, eventually sealing the set with a breadstick.
Summing up the Spaniard’s performance, Gutierrez-Ferrol sought 13 break opportunities and amazingly warded off eight out of 10 breakpoints he faced. He produced a lower first serve share of 44 per cent but acceptably availed 21 out of 32 points on it.
Up next for the Spaniard is winner of the match between eighth seed Frederico Gil and Croatia’s Franko Skugor.
The fifth seed, Simone Bolelli from Italy, also stole the spotlight later that day. He summed up a 7-6(3), 3-6, 7-5 victory against the French contender, Stephane Robert, in almost two and half hours.
The high flying Italian dominated in the opening set tie-breaker to pull out the victory with a 7-6(3) score line.
He failed to fend off the only breakpoint he faced in the proceeding set which resulted in a 3-6 defeat.
The 26-year-old Italian re-gained his strength in the third set and after cashing in both break chances, he captured the decider with a 7-5 success.
